According to Gartner, during the second quarter of 2010, the market has distributed 82.9 million computers worldwide, an increase of 20.7% over one year. These figures exceed the forecasts of analysts who predicted a growth of 19.3%. Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, explains that this is the third consecutive quarter to record a progression in double digits. Consumers spent about 13% more in the second quarter of 2010, while average prices continue to decline.

This decrease is however much lower than that recorded in the last two years. Another key to remember is undoubtedly the period of crisis that is characterized the field of netbooks. Although the sector has significantly increased sales by 70% over the last two quarters, the increase in shipments of netbooks is limited to 20% last quarter. As for companies, Hewlett-Packard confirms his (no surprise) a world leader in the PC market with 17.4% market share and 14.455 million units sold.

Acer moves to second on the podium (13%, 10.796 million), thanks to the excellent results achieved in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) and Asia/ Pacific. The company has followed closely by Dell (12.4%, 10283000), which shows the second consecutive quarter of double digit growth, helped by sales in the business, rather than the end consumer. With 10% of market shares and 8.31 billion PCs sold, Lenovo is a close 4th place thanks to its aggressive pricing, which increases demand and turnover.

The Chinese company is followed by Asus (5.2%, 4,318,000), which registered a growth of 78.5% on year, thanks to a good mix between traditional laptops and netbooks. Asus has focused more on mini-laptops that have a wider profit margin. Toshiba are finally in 6th place on the podium next to Asus with 5.1% market share and sold 4,222,000 PC. Although the market leader, HP, Acer and Dell, have lost share to other companies such as Lenovo, Asus and Toshiba.

In EMEA, the ranking is a bit different. Acer is the market leader with 21.3% and 5.141 million laptops in the second quarter of 2010, compared to 18.9% last year. Hewlett-Packard is second (19.7%, 4.75 billion), with a trend going from 20.8% to 19.7%. Far behind, Dell is positioned in third place with 9.2% market share (10.1% last year) and 2.218 million PCs sold. And yet, there Asus proudly showing an increase in sales of 96.5%!

This result allows the company to Taiwanese climb to 4th place with 2.054 million and sold 8.5% computer market share against 5.3% a year earlier. Toshiba instead is in fifth place with 5.7% market share (5.6% in 2009) and 1,371,000 units distributed. In addition to Asus, Samsung and Sony have also benefited from a significant growth in the sector, thanks to sales of their netbooks. The increase in revenue in EMEA was more significant in the second quarter of 2010 (+21.6%) to 24.099 million PCs sold. No coincidence is the segment of mobile computing that is driving growth, 20% of the netbook market.

In the U.S., where it sold 17.9 million computers in the second quarter of 2010, HP has maintained its leadership (25.7% market share) followed by Dell (23.7%). Acer was a considerable delay (11.3%) and anticipates Apple (9.8%) and Toshiba (8.7%). Please note that Acer has recorded a decrease of 0.1% over a year because of sales of netbook and notebook, half of entry-level. Apple continues to sell their Mac, and Toshiba showing the best growth over one year (39.7%).

3D technology is increasingly at the center of the universe hi-tech, so that larger companies have created and launched several devices (from laptops to all-in-one), with stereoscopic display. Laptop computers, as I said, do not escape this trend, and after MSI, Asus and Acer, Lenovo is the turn. The Chinese company has announced the arrival next year of a laptop equipped with 3D display. Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d will therefore be targeted at hardcore gamers, looking for new emotions and experiences.

Lenovo has chosen to integrate a 3D TriDef panel 15.6-inch (1366 x 768 pixels) that requires the use of polarized sunglasses to watch content in three dimensions. This solution, called passive, is opposed to 3D Vision technology developed by Nvidia that converts images, restoring in three dimensions. Regarding configuration, Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d will be based on Intel Calpella.

The user can choose between multiple processors available (depending on the version), from Core to Core i7-i3 840QM. The graphics component is made by ATI Mobility Radeon HD5730, one of the most efficient models. Some facets exploit the integrated graphics processor in Arrandale to promote independence, when the notebook is used in batteries. The area of data storage will be provided by a 250GB hard drive to 750GB, 5400rpm or 7200rpm.

SSD drives are also available, but only in some markets. Connectivity is fairly complete, in particular, the presence of an eSATA port, HDMI and even ExpressCard 34. Surely we will return to speak in detail when we IdeaPad Y560d more information about pricing and configurations provided in Italy.

Last week we told you about the different models in the IdeaPad line, Lenovo presented. We currently have the Lenovo IdeaPad U165 features that will enrich the range of systems based on AMD platform. Supposedly coming this summer, this new model should have characteristics quite similar to those that dell’IdeaPad U160, however, is based on the Intel platform. It seems obvious that you do not have many official information and news network who are in need of confirmation.

So, taking a moment like the IdeaPad U160 model, one might hypothesize for a 11.6-inch form factor by including the U165 and Windows 7 operating system. A look at the design reinforces the above assumptions given the similarities between the two models. Thin and rational placement of ports and interfaces are the basis of aesthetic choices of the producer who wants to offer a flexible and versatile system.

From the manufacturer’s website you can learn the new IdeaPad will be equipped with Dolby and will be geared towards multimedia content while maintaining the weight that the thickness. Some pictures appeared on the network allow you to appreciate the presence of USB ports, HDMI and VGA port combo eSATA / USB multiformat memory card reader, audio jacks for microphone and headphone port Gigabit Ethernet and integrated webcam.

Furthermore, it appears that the new Lenovo IdeaPad U165 will feature a keyboard with keys to the island: as you know, Lenovo is one of the producers that have the best keyboards for mobile systems. We hope that in this case, the quality is high. To know details about the official final configuration and the price have to wait another few weeks.

Some clues were thinking of an upgrade by the design of the Sony VAIO Series P but this update seems to be much more than aesthetic in the new 8-inch netbook. Sure, the new cover mat is available in five different colors, but Sony has updated its P series of 600 grams with a touchpad and an optical accelerometer.

The first is built into the LCD panel, as the picture above shows, then simply taking the screen – the right pad on the bezel, while the controls right / left mouse to the left. The accelerometer is still the most interesting novelty, because you can turn the device vertically to read the documents, but also tilt to the left or right to move forward or backward while browsing the web. But as said it is not just an aesthetic updates, because to derive benefit was also the possibility of processor upgrade to Intel Atom Z560, as the entry-level unit has a slower Z530.

Will be available from June, but at the time were not widely known, which speaks of the launch price in Europe.
